Learning to drive in a manual car is often a bit trickier than an automatic vehicle allows due to the added procedure of depressing the clutch pedal, moving the gear stick to change gear and releasing the clutch, whilst simultaneously controlling the steering and focusing on the road.

What is an manual car?
With a manual car the driver has to manually select the appropriate gear depending on the speed the car is travelling at. This involves depressing the clutch pedal to disengage the gearbox thereby allowing the driver to move to the next appropriate gear without ‘crashing’ the gears, once the gear level is in place, the driver removes their foot from the clutch pedal, reengaging the gearbox.
As manual gearbox cars are the most popular in the UK, clearly this procedure becomes second nature after practice for most drivers, who learn to preform the procedure without thinking about it. However, for the learner driver, changing gear with a manual car can be one of the most difficult functions to master. This is due to the coordination of the left foot and left hand whilst concentrating on steering. Our driving instructors help our students overcome this difficulty quickly and once mastered, driving a manual car becomes all the more pleasurable.
An manual car consists of 3 pedals, the clutch pedal, the brake pedal and the accelerator.
- The clutch pedal is located on the left side and is operated by by the left foot
- The brake pedal is located in the middle is operated by by the right foot
- The accelerator is located on the right is operated by by the right foot
Our driving school cars have 5 forward gears and 1 reverse gear, the most common configuration in modern cars. Driving a manual car requires a combination use of the gears with the clutch as described above.
